4 Pheasant Lane
Inside the stone bungalow, lofty ceilings and exposed brickwork open up every room. The roll-top bath, walled in by the same raw brick, is the kind of detail that stays with you.
About 4 Pheasant Lane
You don't expect lofty ceilings in a bungalow. But 4 Pheasant Lane is a stone-fronted single-storey cottage on the outskirts of Bolsterstone where the open-plan living space stops you at the door. Exposed brickwork runs from floor to ceiling, and the space flows from a well-equipped kitchen with fridge-freezer and dishwasher through a dining area to a sitting room where a woodburning stove sits ready for the evening. Central heating keeps the floors warm, so the log fire is the kind of extra that makes a cold night feel deliberate.
Two bedrooms sit off the main living space. The king-size double is comfortable and quiet, and the second bedroom takes a standard double. Between them, the bathroom earns more attention than bathrooms usually get. A freestanding roll-top bath sits surrounded by exposed brick, with a handheld shower for the practical side of things. It's a room with actual character, not just tiles and towel rails.
Out in the garden, a shepherd's hut adds a completely separate space. It's studio-style: a double bed, its own sitting area, and a walk-in shower room, making it a proper self-contained retreat for a couple who want their own door to close. For a group of six, it turns the cottage from snug to spacious without anyone having to compromise.
The front garden has a lawn, a patio with furniture, and the hot tub. On a still evening, the quiet out here is the first thing you notice, with the countryside rolling away toward the Peak District and very little between you and it. The water is kept clean and ready, and you end up staying in longer than you meant to. Two dogs are welcome, and the garden gives them space to roam while you soak.
The nearest pub is about a 10-minute walk, manageable but steep enough that you might want a lift back. Stocksbridge is 2.2 miles for everyday shopping, and Fox Valley is nearby for a wider range of shops. Wharncliffe Woods and Forge Woods are nearby for proper walks through thick woodland, and Broomhead Reservoir is only 1.4 miles away for a shorter afternoon loop. Sheffield is close for a day out, with Weston Park, the Winter Garden, and Kelham Island Museum all worth the drive. Hathersage, Bakewell, Edale, and the caverns at Castleton are all within day-trip distance.
Kieran and Rachal look after the place, and they sort things quickly and leave you to it. A welcome pack with tea, coffee, and biscuits is waiting when you arrive. Once the stove is going and the hot tub is warm, you stop making plans.
